Native Lengua, which plans to bring 15 students over from Madrid for the month of July, is still seeking host families for the summer.
For Katka Tkacik and David Conner the best way to learn about a language and a culture is to dive right in. It worked for them, and now they’re trying to afford that opportunity to a new generation of students. Conner and Tkacik, a Concord-Carlisle High School grad, met years ago in a teaching program in Madrid and more recently the pair founded Native Lengua, an exchange program that brings Spanish students to Concord. In just a few weeks, more than a dozen Spanish students ages 13 to 15 will arrive along with two ESL teachers from Madrid. They’ll spend the month of July in Concord, living with host families, taking intensive English as a second language lessons and visiting historical and cultural sites around the area. “The most …

Videos, links and more coverage from Concord-Carlisle High School's commencement ceremonies.
Their principal said they were needed. Their class president said they're prepared. And their Spanish teacher cracked a joke about strippers -- or, if it wasn't about strippers then some other group known for shaking tassels. It was all in an afternoon's work for Concord-Carlisle High School's Class of 2013, which held its commencement ceremonies on Saturday, June 8 at CCHS. In his introductory remarks, CCHS Principal Peter Badalament quoted from the odd couple of Nelson Mandela and Conan O'Brien to urge his former students to "be courageous" and avoid being cyincal. "We need you now more than ever," said Badalament to his graduating class. "You are our next generation." Class of 2013 President Andrew Della Volpe said is classmates are …

Music from Disney's 'The Lion King' was featured prominently in Concord-Carlisle High School's commencement ceremony, held Saturday, June 8 at CCHS.
Commencement ceremonies and motion picture scores can be fertile ground for quote and cliché. And when they come together in one place, it can be all kinds of fun. Maybe it goes something like, oh, I don't know, this: High school graduation is a prominent point on the 'Circle of Life.' It's a moment when adults wll sometimes call upon quotes and clichés and advise graduating seniors to "Be Prepared." And then, perhaps, some ambitious graduation speaker jokes 'I Just Can't Wait to Be King,' when really he means to lead the young men and women he's grown up with to set out confidently on their next journey in life. And maybe, just maybe, it will all culminate with some kind of 'Hakuna Matata,' go-forth-with-no-worries-and-embrace-the-endless…

Despite being stuck indoors, Concord-Carlisle High School sent its Class of 2013 off in style on Saturday, June 8, with memorble commencement ceremony that saw the principal cite both Nelson Mandela and Conan O'Brien and the faculty speaker crack a joke about strippers. "We need you now more than ever," said CCHS Principal Peter Badalament to his graduating class. "You are our next generation." Quoting from the odd couple of Mandela and O'Brien, the principal urged his former students to "be courageous" and avoid being cyincal. Commencement speaker Eric Pohl, a foreign languages teacher also known as "Señor Pohl," more or less opened with a joke that you'll just have to hear -- which, incidentally, you can do by clicking on the video …

It's a longstanding tradition for the outgoing senior class to pull a prank. Learn what some of this year's have been, and share yours.
It's that time of year again: when eager-to-be-free seniors conspire with their classmates to pull off a memorable and (hopefully) harmless prank. A quick internet search of "Senior prank" will pull up articles about some of the shenanigans of teens this year. At Methuen High, the halls were trashed overnight and police cautioned students of the ramifications of the act (technically, they could be charged with breaking and entering.) At a high school in Pennsylvania, seniors vandalized the high school mascot and other school property, causing $1,500 in damage. In Georgia, one high school class covered classrooms with tin foil and bubble wrap. Locally, Westborough High seniors refrained from destruction, pulling a prank that culminated with…

The Masconomet Chieftains defeated the Patriots of Concord-Carlisle, 11-10, in the first round of the Division 1 North playoffs in Boxford on Wednesday, May 29.
The following was provided on behalf of the Concord-Carlisle High School girls lacrosse program. In spite of Concord-Carlisle junior attack Becca Olsen’s season high 6 goals, the Masconomet Chieftains defeated the CC Patriots, 11-10, in the first round of the Division 1 North playoffs in Boxford Wednesday. The hard-driving Chieftains outfought the Patriots through much of the game, winning the majority of both draw controls (15 of 21) and ground balls. Chieftain midfielder Kathleen Gillespie set the tone for Masco by winning the initial draw control and driving hard and straight to goal for the early lead, while Masconomet’s high-pressure defense limited CC’s ability to transition the ball down the field for much of the game. CC battled …
