CCHS Girls Lacrosse: Patriots Push Past Bucs, Pull Magic Act on Marblehead

Two wins last week for the Patriots, who are battling for a postseason bid.

The following was provided on behalf of the Concord-Carlisle High School girls varsity lacrosse program. Junior Becca Olsen collected four goals to help pace the CC Patriots (7-8-1) past the Bedford Buccaneers (4-9-1) 18-6 in Sunday’s makeup game. After initially allowing two goals to the Buccaneers’ back on May 9 under threatening skies, CC poured on the offense with three goals in the next three minutes of play before the skies opened up resulting in a game postponement. The Patriots picked up where they left off during Sunday’s makeup game, dousing their opponent with eight goals to Bedford’s one. Goals came fast and widespread throughout the game from 10 CC players, including Kate Wyeth (3 goals), Allie Barrett (2 goals), Emma Mahoney…

A Rally Today for Concord Teachers

Plans for a rally at 4:30 p.m. at Monument Square, and presence at School Committee this evening.

A manhunt may not be the only excitement in town today.  A large rally is planned for 4:30 p.m. this afternoon at the flagbople in Monument Square, following which the crowd plans to move over to the Concord School Committee's meeting this evening at Willard School, according to parents with ties to the Concord Public Schools.  Police Chief Barry Neal confirmed to Patch that a peaceful rally is planned for this afternoon.  This makes the second rally in the past few weeks as unrest around the schools continues to simmer.   On April 30, parents and teachers gathered outside the Ripley Administration Building to back Merrie Najimy, the Concord Teachers Association president and third-grade teacher at Thoreau School who has allegedly been …

What's in a List? CCHS Shows Well in One, Nearly Tops Another

Or, more evidence ‘Best of' lists should always be taken with a grain of salt.

Does GoLocal Worcester know something Newsweek doesn’t? And does either of those pubs check their math with BoMag's or the US News and World Report? Hard not to ponder those questions after Concord-Carlisle High nearly topped the Worcester pub’s list of the state’s best high schools, but was only toward the top of the Commonwealth in Newsweek’s rankings of the nation’s top high schools. The No. 4 spot CCHS claimed on GoLocal Worcester’s list of Massachusetts’ Top High Schools in 2013 is pretty close to to the norm, when these “Best of" lists are compiled by an in-state publication. In the not too distant past, CC occupied the No. 4 spot on Boston Magazine’s Best Schools of 2012 list. However, Concord-Carlisle was ranked 33rd by US News…

My Favorite Teacher Is ...

In honor of National Teacher Day, we ask you to share your stories of gratitude, and let us know who the best teacher in town is.

"You must be a woman of great patience," she said upon meeting my fiance for the first time earlier this year. That's Mrs. Lent, my 12th grade English teacher, still shooting straight as ever. Didn't matter that I'm a decade out of high school, or that we were in church for my nephew's Christening; the honesty of Claire Lent always finds a way to put me in my place. That's Mrs. Lent, my favorite teacher. She respected her students as individuals in a way that classes worked together toward a common goal rather than being shepherded along a standardized syllabus. She challenged us as we challenged her -- and then some. Her honesty, while blunt, was refreshing and effective. With a sharp tongue and wise words, Mrs. Lent taught us lessons …

CCHS Girls Lacrosse: Battling for Middle Ground

The Patriots went 1-2 in last week's lacrosse action.

The following was provided on behalf of the Concord-Carlisle High School girls lacrosse program. It’s been a tough season for the CCHS Girls Lacrosse team. With only one senior starter returning and several young, athletic but inexperienced varsity players in the 2013 lineup, Coach Morrison knew in many respects this would be a re-building year for his team. What was not expected however, were the injuries which continued to pile up and plague the team. With four starters out this week, the timing could not have been worse for CC as they faced Dual County League rival Wayland. Going into Monday’s game the Warriors were 8-1-1, with only a 14-8 loss to undefeated Westford Academy and a 12-12 tie to the Patriots. With starting center Hannah …

Concord Parents, Teachers Rally ‘Round Embattled CTA President

Impromptu Tuesday afternoon rally outside administration building leads to hallway meeting with Superintendent Diana Rigby.

Dozens of Concord parents and teachers stayed after school on Tuesday, April 30, in a show of support for Merrie Najimy, the Concord Teachers Association president and third-grade teacher at Thoreau School who has allegedly been told her principal will not be recommending her rehire next year. The rally took place outside of the Ripley Administration Building, a hastily organized gathering called by the CTA after Najimy learned Tuesday morning she will not get a recommendation from Thoreau Principal Kelly Clough. Najimy told the crowd of about 50 that her situation is indicative of larger problems within the district, where teachers feel there is a top-down approach and things are done to them, not with them. “We are at a point where we …

The following was provided on behalf of Concord-Carlisle High School girls varsity lacrosse. Senior Captain Kate Wyeth led the Patriots with 3 goals and 1 assist while Juniors Becca Olsen and Emma Mahoney each collected 3 goals. With continued injuries to three veteran starters, Coach Paul Morrison needed to rely heavily on his five freshmen players including Cassidy Hale, Brianna Stout, Madeline Leahy, Johanna O’Neil and Center Hannah Dudley, all of whom battled mightily and showed great composure in a very close match.
