Beede Center runs a blood drive to benefit Tyler Berry, plus a volunteer opportunity and movie night at Fowler.
Well, it’s finally looking like winter around here, what with the recent snowfall. And I have to say, I loved Chris Tanguay’s photos of winter around town last week – pure magic! But I especially love when the snowfall is followed by rising temperatures, resulting in snowmelt. That’s because, much as I love the look of new fallen snow, I really don’t love shoveling the stuff, or raking it off my roof. So it’s really nice when Mother Nature cleans up her own messes. Thank you, Mom! Now on to more important stuff: a few weeks ago, I told you about Tyler Berry, a personal trainer over at the Beede Center, who is battling Germ Cell cancer, and that his friends and coworkers would be planning a blood drive in his honor. Well, that time has …

Author to speak on Transcendentalism
Hello Patch fans, welcome to the middle of January. The Friends of the Concord Free Public Library is hosting yet another Thursday Author Series this week. Jan. 19, come to the Periodical Room of the main library to hear Polly Peterson will discuss her book, “Stirring the Nation’s Heart: Eighteen Stories of Prophetic Unitarians and Universalists of the Nineteenth Century.” Polly also appears as part the library’s “Collecting Transcendentalism” exhibition, on view at the main library through Jan. 31. “Stirring the Nation’s Heart” focuses on the new ideas about religion, education, and human rights that stirred the hearts of New England’s nineteenth-century transcendentalists and reformers. The biographical stories in the book feature …

Good morning and welcome to Thursday! Before we get down to real business, I’d like to take a moment to wax rhapsodic about my sheets. Yes, my sheets. For a number of years now, I’ve had flannel sheets for the winter months – we like to keep the heat down at night – because it’s a little easier to slide into the warmer flannel than the cool cotton ones. But this year, I discovered fleece sheets, and I have to tell you, they are deliciously warm and lovely. Makes getting into bed on a cold winter night pure heaven. Only downside is it’s a little harder to get out of them in the morning. Even so, you really should check these out, particularly if, like me, you need some incentives to get through the winter months here in the northeast. Ok…

Get out those cameras and win a $100 savings bond.
Hello and welcome to St. Fred Day. Back on this day in 1970-something, I mean 60-something, OK, let’s be real, 50-something, Fred Abbott was born. What a wonderful day that was, so I’m told, as I was not around. Neither was his lovely wife Linda Ziffrin, who came around a few years and four days later. How fun to celebrate your birthday with your soul mate. Happy Birthday to you both! On the subject of birthdays, I was heading into the West Concord Post Office yesterday to mail off my nephew/godson’s birthday gift (I hope it gets there on time!) when I came across the announcement for the second annual “Winter in Concord” photo contest. I know we haven't had the most photographic winter on record, but that's no reason to not try to win …

Local doctor reads from her new book on heart health for women.
Well, it looks like winter has finally arrived in all its icy cold glory. I knew it would, but that doesn’t mean I wanted it to. You may recall back in the summer, when I suggested taking the memory of the sweltering hot day, the one that had sweat trickling down the small of your back, and tucking it away to take out when needed. Well, that time is now. I put some pretty specific hot weather moments into my memory time capsule just so I can think on them when the mercury dips so low my breath freezes in front of my face. Believe it or not, it really does help. But that’s because I’m more of a warm-weather girl, which is kind of a problem given that I live in the frigid northeast! This new bout of cold weather coincided with the new year…

A vision of the perfect vacation.
Welcome to 2012. I trust everyone had a wonderful New Year and holiday season. We sure did, and I admit to eating every butter-laden thing in sight, but it was a small price to pay for spending so much time with good people. Sisterly Love What would I know about it? Not much as I never had one. My parents tried. I’ll give them that. Then, minutes after my fourth brother was born, my father said something to me like, “Well, Doll, (he calls me Doll) what can I say?” I took that to mean that the opportunity was lost forever. Thus, I have had to experience sisterly love vicariously through other girls. Fortunately for me, I know some great gals who have just-as-awesome sisters who know how to enjoy life. Brenda Chia is a prime example. A few…

Perils of drinking and driving.
Hello, happy Friday and welcome to the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012. Don't forget today is the final day to submit your receipts for the Concord Indies contest. All you need are a receipt from one Concord Indie in three of the four shopping zones (check the website), and a filled in entry form. Submit it to the address on the website and you could be eligible to win a $200 shopping spree. Good luck! Before we usher out the old and ring in the new, I just want to remind you to be careful with your merry making. We all love a good time, and some of us like to mix in a few libations with our celebrations. Nothing wrong with that if you are of age and in control, but none of us wants to experience the perils of drinking too much and…

Some end of year thoughts, craft plans, and a cabaret night.
Good morning and welcome to Thursday! We’re more than halfway through that weird week between holidays, recovering from the gluttony of sweets and presents while we gird up to welcome in the New Year. I’m sure all your holiday wrapping paper is put away, any visiting relatives have safely been shooed off to visit yet another local landmark, and you’re making your list of resolutions for the coming year even as we speak. Or, if you’re like me, you’re wondering how it got to be Thursday and the opened presents are still under the tree and you can’t account for how the time has passed. Good thing there are still several days left before the week runs out, January begins, and we all have to get down to business. I personally think there’s …

Invest in the Christmas Carol Fund.
Hello and welcome to Wednesday everyone! We are in that weird week between Christmas and New Year. Lots of bargains to be had with the after-Christmas sales. I’m all about a great deal. And, while I am no financial planner, if you’ve got a few dollars left over from the holidays, here a few investment suggestions guaranteed to reap healthy dividends, not just for you, but your friends and neighbors, too. The Christmas Carol Fund, named in honor of Carol Robichaud, helps support Minuteman Arc’s Early Intervention Program. The Early Intervention program provides high-quality services for the younger residents of Concord and surrounding communities who are at risk for developmental delays. The program also helps our little ones manage …

Ways to dispose of that dead tree in your house.
So here we are, two days after the big Christian holiday, and frankly that tree in my house is looking a little sad and droopy. I do find it a kind of strange tradition: bring a dead tree into your house, dress it all up to look fancy, make it the center of your holiday decorating, and then a few weeks later, take the whole thing down. It’s an awful lot of work for such a short time. Did you know that this practice goes back as far as the 15th century? And that the tradition really started in Germany, where they didn’t even decorate the tree until Christmas Eve? And then it was with real candles? Talk about a fire hazard. And as much as I love the smell of balsam, once the holiday has passed, I’m pretty much over the whole tree thing. …
