About Town

Art, Art Everywhere

Artists Jean Lightman and Anne Krinsky show their art, and CYT is looking to add seats to their new space.

Good morning and welcome to a brand-new week! A pretty special week, with a whole day devoted just to eating practically in the middle of it. If you’re hosting the meal at your house, my guess is you’re up to your elbows in shopping and cooking; if you’re traveling, most likely you’re packing and canceling the paper. If you’re not doing either, well, you can sit back and relax and get ready to just eat. While the rest of us have been running around and beginning the holiday prep, we have several residents who have been very busy feeding their creative soul. Artist Jean Lightman is one of them: She’s exhibiting her beautiful and lifelike oil paintings at the Guild of Boston Artists. Her peonies look so real, I want to touch them. Lightman…

Big Sculptures, a Garden Tour, and Mulch

Emerson Umbrella hosts an opening for their sculpture exhibit, the Concord Museum hosts its annual Garden Tour, and the composting site is open for business.

Hello, people, and welcome to Thursday! It’s the one day that stands between you and Friday, the day that ushers in the first official weekend of summer. I hope you’ve got your barbeque grills spiffed up and ready to go – personally, we use ours all winter, but we’re pretty excited to get back into making it a more regular event. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but there are some new big sculptures out on the lawn in front of Emerson Umbrella. It was the egg-shaped sculpture that initially caught my eye, so I chatted with mixed-media artist Max Payne to get the skinny. About three years ago, Emerson Umbrella decided to let people know what they were all about, as well as showcase some of their artists, by putting their large sculptures …

Why have you moved "Five things you need to know today" off of the daily alerts you send? And I don't like the "Patchcast" for two reasons -- first, I want to READ news on my computer, not watch videos, and second, I subscribed to the Concord Patch to get news about Concord, not about other towns. Update: "The Producers" is Coming; Is There a Link Between Art and Angst?

Ire from Art; CCHS stages The Producers.

Art and Angst I was reading a Boston Globe article this week about a Cambridge artist offering an updated version of the universal handicapped-access sign. A photograph included her proposed image stuck over the original blue-and-white. Honestly, I had never thought about updating the age-old image, but was impressed that someone else had. Then, as I often do when the opportunity arises, I read the comments readers had posted. I was amazed at the hostility many of the posters voiced about the artist’s endeavors. I did not even get to read the overly abusive comments that had been deleted by the editors. While art may arouse angst from an audience, it may also bring it out in the artist. Sometimes, the angst that is brought forth may …
