Have You Heard of the Concord Baseball Club?

Has: wooden bats. Wants: new members.

The club folklore goes something like this: "On July 4, 1879, the Concord Base Ball Club played a team from Boston on the Concord Grounds, located directly behind the train Depot on Thoreau Street. In April 2011, this program was resurrected."  In its current form, the Concord Baseball Club appeals to men over the age of 45 who still haven't outgrown their love of the game. There are 22 such men on the current roster, and the Club is actively seeking new members. According to a press release provided by the Club, the group gathers on the diamond at Emerson Field one or two mornings a week from early April through end of October. "It's a very relaxed, unstructured program that features long toss, batting practice, shagging fly balls and …

Question of the Day: Who Do You Favor for the AL Pennant?

Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

In truly dramtic August style, the Boston Red Sox reclaimed first place over the New York Yankees in the American League this weekend thanks to the strength of Josh Reddick's bat. With the end of regular season play a little more than a month away, who do you favor for the American League Pennant this year?

American Legion Baseball Season in Review

Tale of two halves; defensive struggles defined season for Concord Post 158.

Just about a month ago, the Concord Post 158 American Legion baseball team entered the Fourth of July break ready for some celebrating. The team was in first place in its District 5 zone midway through the summer season. In the week leading up to the break, Post 158 had played four games — making up for some early-season rain — and won three. The only loss was the final game of the first half to Hudson Post 100, which was mired by a big inning by the opponent and sloppy defense by Concord. The team didn’t know it at the time, but that setback foreshadowed the rest of the summer. The only fireworks seemed to come from the opposing dugout. “I felt like we had a lot of momentum,” coach John Morrissey said, of entering the midpoint of the year…

Concord Senior American Legion Overpowered by Sudbury

Early 5-0 lead turns into 15-6 loss.

Early 5-0 leads are not unheard of in baseball. Neither are the associated early pitching changes, or teams rallying to erase the deficit. But the Concord Senior American Legion baseball team couldn't hold on to a second-inning 5-0 lead against Sudbury Post 191 Tuesday night at Sudbury's Feeley Field, and eventually wound up on the short end of a 15-6 result. The visitors had it going from the outset, as five straight batters reached base in the first inning. Andrew Della Volpe put Concord on the board that inning with a two-run double, plating Michael Taylor and Brendan Canavan. Three more runs in the second thanks to hits by Taylor and Canavan were enough to chase Sudbury's Matt Cahill after only 1 2/3 innings. Cahill swapped positions …

Sports Week in Review, June 25 - July 1

A recap of the games and stories Patch covered in and around Concord this week.

The Concord Post 158 American Legion baseball team had a busy slate of games this week, as the squad took the field four times ahead of the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Concord started off well enough by winning the first three games it played. However, on Wednesday, the team dropped its final game of the first half of the year. Sloppy defense and an opportunistic Hudson Post 100 team dealt Post 158 an 8-6 loss. The team will return to the field on July 5. Also this week, Patch caught up with two of the directors of the Concord-Carlisle Youth Lacrosse organization’s Fall Ball program. Brian Stout and Dan Bowen spoke about the expansion of the offseason program in the years they’ve led the boys’ side. The two also touched on the growing …

Concord Post 158 Falls to Hudson

Sloppy defense snaps Post 158's three-game winning streak.

The Concord Post 158 baseball team has played well to start the American Legion summer league, but there’s just one area that the team has been inconsistent – defense. Concord’s defensive struggles reared their head again Wednesday against Hudson Post 100 at Emerson Playground. Playing with an early lead, the home team started to throw the ball around in the middle innings. Hudson took advantage and eventually picked up the 8-6 victory in the District 5 contest. “I think we were a little shaky defensively, that’s what we talked about here afterwards,” Post 158 coach John Morrissey said. “We gave them a few extra outs. (Hudson) can swing the bats well. When you give good hitting teams extra outs they’re going to make you pay.” Wednesday’s …

Concord Post 158 Topped by Medford

Big 7th inning gives Medford a boost.

It was the seventh inning of Tuesday night’s game at Emerson Field that did in Concord Post 158 in American Legion play. Medford Post 45 added five runs to its two-run advantage to run away from Concord for an 8-1 victory. “(Medford) got away from us a little bit there,” said Concord coach John Morrissey. “I thought the strike zone was a little tighter than it was in the rest of the game to be honest with you, but that’s not an excuse. “They just hit the ball. I think all night (Medford) made the plays on some hard hit balls; obviously the play there at the end that they made was excellent. They played well defensively and we really didn’t. They swung the bats well.” Medford came to bat in the top of the seventh inning against Brandon …
