Eagle Scout Project Benefits The Discovery Museums

Concord's Michael Vrablik, of Boy Scout Troop 132, helped construct the museums' new stairs and railings.

(EDITOR'S NOTE: The following edited release was submitted by Ann Sgarzi.) The Discovery Museums in Acton have two new sets of stairs with railings leading from the parking lot to their wooden picnic area thanks to Concord's Michael Vrablik, 16, of Boy Scout Troop 132. Michael chose to build the stairways to improve the accessibility of the picnic area as his Eagle Scout Service Project. “Access to the picnic area had been limited due to damage from recent erosion. We are grateful to Michael for his hard work on a job well done,” said Steve Roake, exhibit and facilities director at The Discovery Museums. Michael supervised a team of 27 people over three days using materials donated by Bushnell Construction of Chelmsford and the Town of …

Mustangs Earn Eagle Honors

Minuteman High graduates all attained the rank of Eagle Scout.

The following was provided by Judy Bass, communications specialist for Minuteman High School, the regional career and technical high school serving the communities of Acton, Arlington, Belmont, Bolton, Boxborough, Carlisle, Concord, Dover, Lancaster, Lexington, Lincoln, Needham, Stow, Sudbury, Wayland, and Weston. Michael Bowe of Bolton, Anthony Perugini of Carlisle, Kenneth Roith of Maynard and Michael Spaulding of Groton have quite a bit in common. Not only did they graduate from Minuteman High School in Lexington in June, but they all attained the rank of Eagle Scout, an especially remarkable achievement when you consider that the Class of 2012 at Minuteman to which the four young men belong had 108 male students, meaning that an …

Oh, Christmas Tree

Ways to dispose of that dead tree in your house.

So here we are, two days after the big Christian holiday, and frankly that tree in my house is looking a little sad and droopy. I do find it a kind of strange tradition: bring a dead tree into your house, dress it all up to look fancy, make it the center of your holiday decorating, and then a few weeks later, take the whole thing down. It’s an awful lot of work for such a short time. Did you know that this practice goes back as far as the 15th century? And that the tradition really started in Germany, where they didn’t even decorate the tree until Christmas Eve? And then it was with real candles? Talk about a fire hazard. And as much as I love the smell of balsam, once the holiday has passed, I’m pretty much over the whole tree thing. …

Neighbors Helping Neighbors, and Kids Helping Kids

Concord Boy Scouts collect donations for Afghan kids.

I think it’s so great when kids want to help other kids, particularly kids they’ve never even met before. That’s what the Boy Scouts Troop 132 is doing, by collecting clothes and toys and school supplies for kids in Afghanistan. The cause is Operation Outreach Afghanistan, an organization in Afghanistan that helps local kids — kids who have been living with war for years and can use a few things. Can you imagine not having winter clothes when it gets cold? Or going to school but not having the supplies to actually learn? These are things that kids here in Concord are lucky enough to not even have to think about, which is why it’s great that these kids ARE thinking about them for kids who HAVE to think about them. The Scouts were inspired …
