WATCH: Making Masters-Inspired Azalea Cocktails at the Colonial Inn

During one of golf's biggest weekends, a taste of Augusta National here in Concord.

The Liberty restaurant at Concord’s Colonial Inn is teeing up a taste of Augusta National in honor of the Masters--perhaps the PGA’s most famous golf tournament--opening today in Georgia. Azalea cocktails and a peach cobbler tart are among the Masters-inspired items joining the menu from today, April 11, through the tournament’s final round on Sunday. Liberty’s chef Cassie Pianowski will be serving up a taste of the south in the form of a peach cobbler tart featuring flambéed peaches, orange graham cracker ice cream and cinnamon crème. The restaurant will also offer an azalea cocktail, which combines gin, lemon and pineapple juice and a splash of grenadine. Inside the Forge Tavern, bartenders like Emily Roux will be mixing up azalea …

Taking Time for You

Tea at the Colonial Inn, spa services, and some art.

Good morning, people! It’s Monday, the first day of a brand-spanking-new week, full of possibility and promise of all things good. And, I have no doubt, a crazy long list of things that need to get done: Cookies that need baking, items that need wrapping, meals that need planning. It’s exhausting just thinking about it, and the week has just begun – what’s a body to do?? I’ll tell you: Take a breather and renew your energy. You know you want to, you know you need to. Just an hour or two to yourself, to recharge your batteries and take up the charge anew. But how do you squeeze that in, what with that very long to do list? I’ve got a few ideas up my sleeve. First up: Afternoon tea at the Colonial Inn. This is a lovely tradition started by…

Gifts of the Heart

There are many ways to give.

Hello and welcome to Friday! As promised, I continue to list the top 10 reasons we should be doing as much of our holiday shopping as possible at our local merchants, aka The Concord Indies. Here is reason 3 as taken from the Concord Indies website: 3. Local Decision-Making Local ownership ensures that important decisions are made locally by people who live in the community and who will feel the impacts of those decisions. True, true, so true. We certainly want our business owners to be as vested in our community as we are. Responsible, independent retailers are guaranteed to make that happen. Gifts of the heart Did you know that the classic Christmas carol, “The Little Drummer Boy,” was written right here in Concord? Yes, back in 1941, …

Jazz For Alzheimer's

Outdoor dining, jazz notes for caregivers

Welcome to Wednesday everyone. I’ve got a lot packed into this little column today so stay with me to the end. First, I want to reflect briefly on Monday. Could you believe how gorgeous it was? I spent the afternoon running errands around town. Within minutes of being out doors, I stuffed my fleece into my bag. I didn’t need it. The temperatures were unbelievable for a mid-November day. I happened to be walking past the Colonial Inn where I saw diners waiting for tables on the porch. Who would have thought you could still comfortably eat a sit-down lunch outdoors on Nov. 14. The tables were full and the wait staff were bustling about, probably just as happy as the diners to be outside on such a beautiful day. Now, we’ll fast-forward to …

Update: Happy Trails Coming Next Week/How Do You Take Your Jazz?

Portion of Battle Road Trail closed due to storm.

Hello Friends and Happy Labor Day Friday. It appears to have all the makings of a fantastic end-of-summer weekend. So, get out and go places, see friends and enjoy!   Long Weekend Fridays Friday before a long weekend is always a great day, but I’ve been told there is one exception. Years ago, before I met my husband, I spent a lot of my free time with a very fun, albeit broke, undergrad at the College of the Holy Cross. To keep me accustomed to the lifestyle I hoped to become accustomed to, he decided to get a job selling cars. He showed so much promise — besides a 3.7 GPA — that the dealership sent him out-of-state to a seminar on selling cars. He came back brimming with all these tidbits about cars and sales. The only one that stuck in …

11:59 am on Friday, September 2, 2011

I had to fix a washing machine today. I had no choice. It was broken. I told the people that it was Friday before Labor Day, but they were willing to take their chances. The machine is fixed now. It just spills a little water all over the floor. I didn't have a replacement hose. I told them not to worry, though, that the dog will lap it up and no one will even know. So, now that I'm done, Cape …   more ›
