Local author Jim Leahy will be hosting the second annual National Poetry Month Open Mic at the Concord Bookshop this Sunday, April 22 starting at 3 p.m.
In celebration of Earthday, local author Jim Leahy will be hopsting the second annual National Poetry Month Open Mic at the Concord Bookshop at 65 Main St Concord. Leahy also produces the weekly Poetry Moment program on local CCTV channel 8, and is the host of a monthly poetry circle at Debra’s Natural Gourmet where he is employed as manager. “I really came to love poetry only in the last 10 years or so, and particularly came to realize that poems, when read aloud, just come to life in all kinds of ways. The power, the rhythm, the music of sound adds an evocative layer that is simply not there when I read silently. Even when…

Whether it is a small cradle quilt passed down in the family of a patriot of the American Revolution, a large quilt commemorating the 1975 Bicentennial of that war, or a complex geometric pattern crafted in silk like this one, each quilt in the Concord Museum collection has a story to tell about the makers, the communities they lived in, and the era in which the quilt was made. During the Victorian era, the log cabin style quilt became popular and women on the forefront of fashion often chose to make…

The closing of my favorite third place, Walden Grille, prompted that column. Ray Oldenburg’s book The Great Good Place articulates these opinions in convincing detail. We need an escape place. Other countries accommodate this need in their town squares, cafes, parks, coffee shops and pubs. We in the U.S. are spread out and have to look for and establish our Other Place. In that column I stressed my personal Third Place standard: a neighborhood pub. But there is another type of third place. It …
