Youth Coordinator organizes movie night.
In her parenting column here on Patch, Maria Tinglof has written about the joys of old-fashioned summers: pick-up baseball games and popsicle stick crafts. And when I was a kid, playing meant catching frogs in the swamp and climbing apple trees in the neighbor’s yard. But most kids now would rather spend their free time playing computer games or trolling iTunes for more things to download. This lack of kid connection to the natural world concerned the good people at Concord Children’s Center (CCC), even more so when they heard a presentation by the author of “Last Child in the Woods,” a book about how disconnected our children are from the outdoors. Another installment of Music on the Lawn. Keys found, and the summer weekend draws to a close.
Happy Monday! More significantly, Happy August! And more importantly, Happy Birthday to my husband. August is a great month — or so my husband tells me. But let’s face it, it’s really nothing more than just one long Sunday night. You look puzzled. Well, think about it. School, business, and a return to all the normal scheduled activities that September brings are now just a month away. It’s as if tomorrow, the summer weekend will end and we will return to our routine lives. The good news is, though, that we still have a month of summer to go, so I hope you make the most of it. As you know, when you live in New England, when summer ends, there’s just cooler days ahead. Did You Lose Your Keys? I stopped by the Colonial Stores, purchasing …

With temperatures peaking at 97 today, people are coming up with all kinds of ways to avoid the heat.
For some, relief cannot come soon enough from the heat that has settled in across much of the Northeast. True Bay Staters, however, are taking it in stride, as temperatures in the mid to upper 90s — hovering around 100 — are to be expected from a New England summer. Here are some ways to stay cool when it's super hot: Concord Recreation Day Camp Kids from kindergarten through seventh grade can still sign up for camp at the Hunt Recreation Center on Stow Street, with sessions running July 25-29, Aug. 1-5, Aug. 8-12. Post Camp, for those who attended at least one of the earlier sessions, will be held Aug. 15-19. Rates vary dependent upon age and the camp sessions selected. Camp Director Molly Frank said when the temperatures rise like this, …
