A First Day Hike and Support for a Theatre

Join the Thoreau Society in a walk around Walden tomorrow, and check out CYT’s annual fundraiser and program offerings.

Good morning, all, and welcome to the very last day of 2012! Congratulations for making it all the way through another year! I know it’s traditional to be reflective and look back at how the year went, but I’ll leave that to each of you to do on your own. Me, I’m looking forward. And what better way to usher in the New Year here in Concord than by taking a First Day Hike with Henry David Thoreau? OK, he’s really historian Richard Smith portraying Thoreau, but still, it’s iconic and it’s only here. There’s something so peaceful about taking a walk in the woods, and these woods are particularly inspiring. The walk takes place over at Walden Pond State Reservation on Route 126 (also known as Walden Street), beginning at noon at the house …

About Town

Art, Art Everywhere

Artists Jean Lightman and Anne Krinsky show their art, and CYT is looking to add seats to their new space.

Good morning and welcome to a brand-new week! A pretty special week, with a whole day devoted just to eating practically in the middle of it. If you’re hosting the meal at your house, my guess is you’re up to your elbows in shopping and cooking; if you’re traveling, most likely you’re packing and canceling the paper. If you’re not doing either, well, you can sit back and relax and get ready to just eat. While the rest of us have been running around and beginning the holiday prep, we have several residents who have been very busy feeding their creative soul. Artist Jean Lightman is one of them: She’s exhibiting her beautiful and lifelike oil paintings at the Guild of Boston Artists. Her peonies look so real, I want to touch them. Lightman…

Sharing the Road, and Sharing the Stage

Concord Youth Theatre introduces a new program for younger kids; plus a short reminder on road etiquette.

I’ve had a couple of requests from faithful readers to address the car/bike situation here in town, and since our roads and this fine weather do seem to invite both types of vehicles, I thought I would just take a minute to address the issue. The bottom line is: Both drivers and bikers are entitled to use the roads, but neither is allowed to impede traffic. The best I can do is urge respect on both sides, because in an altercation, someone will get hurt, and it probably won’t be the one inside the huge hunk of metal. Also, as the parent of a newly licensed driver, I would remind bicyclists that not every driver out there is totally confident about passing them, and may not have the experience to do it as well as they would like. Actually…

About Town: Legally Blonde Opens; Thoreau Society Hosts Annual Gathering

Concord Youth Theatre welcomes summer with a show and Thoreau is appreciated.

Well, we’re a full week into the summer, and so far we’ve had searing heat and torrential rain. This could bode for some pretty interesting weather over the next two months! No matter, it’s just nice to have the long days and warm nights – I’m loving being out of doors every single day. Theatre Tonight If you don’t already have your tickets, now is the time to buy them: Concord Youth Theatre is showing “Legally Blonde” tonight, tomorrow night and Saturday night at 7:30, over at the theatre at the Middlesex School, 1400 Lowell Road. It’s the story of society gal Elle Woods who sets out to win back her boyfriend by following him to Harvard Law School. It’s fun and funny and a great way to introduce your kids to theatre, especially because …

Odds and Ends

Some end of year thoughts, craft plans, and a cabaret night.

Good morning and welcome to Thursday! We’re more than halfway through that weird week between holidays, recovering from the gluttony of sweets and presents while we gird up to welcome in the New Year. I’m sure all your holiday wrapping paper is put away, any visiting relatives have safely been shooed off to visit yet another local landmark, and you’re making your list of resolutions for the coming year even as we speak. Or, if you’re like me, you’re wondering how it got to be Thursday and the opened presents are still under the tree and you can’t account for how the time has passed. Good thing there are still several days left before the week runs out, January begins, and we all have to get down to business. I personally think there’s …

Update: Audition Time/Remembering a Concordian

Concord Youth Theater holds auditions for their fall musicals.

Anniversaries are a big deal, they give us a chance to commemorate important events. And although we acknowledge anniversaries each year, it’s the big ones — 10 years, 20 years — where we pay particular attention and maybe do something a little more special. This September marks the 10-year anniversary of the events of September 11th, and here in town, the Al Filipov Peace and Justice Forum has scheduled a number of events to commemorate it. Al Filipov lived in Concord, and happened to be on one of the planes that morning. But these events aren’t about how his life ended: they’re about celebrating the way he lived. You see, Al was an involved member of the community here, a little league coach, a Rotarian, and an active member of the …

Update: The Play's the Thing

Tickets are now on sale for Concord Youth Theatre's Young Adult Performance Company's production of Stephen Sondheim's "Merrily We Roll Along" next week at the Middlesex School.

When I was a kid, my activities didn’t involve any balls, or fields, or sticks of any kind. No, I was a theater girl, happiest when I could be making an utter fool of myself in front of complete strangers. And I did this every chance I could, which meant the several times a year my high school put on shows. Which is why I’m more than a little sad that Concord Youth Theatre wasn’t around then, because they’re a great place for kids who want to act out their passion for theater. And they have the staff to back it up. They offer classes and workshops, and put on shows, and basically give kids a place to learn all about live theater. And next week they’re putting on a really cool musical, "Merrily We Roll Along," by Stephen Sondheim, the guy …
