When Is the Last Day of School?

As February vacation winds down with snow showers in the forecast for three out of the next seven days, some are wondering when the Concord Schools are scheduled to let out for summer vacation.

As February vacation winds down and we head into a weekend wherein forecasts are calling for up to another foot of snow, it seems like an appropriate time to peek ahead at when the 2012-2013 school year might end.    According to the Concord Schools most recently updated calendar, published Monday, Feb. 11, the tentative final day of school will be Thursday, June 20. That’s a half-day for students K-8, according to the Concord Public Schools calendar, and a professional development day will be held Friday, June 21, for CPS and Concord-Carlisle High School.   Planned makeup days, if needed, will be June 24, 25 and 26. And the CCHS graduation, meanwhile, is scheduled for Saturday, June 8.   Of course, this is all subject to change, what with…

Mass. Not in Top 10 for Graduation Rate, Concord Above State Average

Massachusetts had an adjusted graduation rate of 83 percent for the 2010-2011 school year. How did Concord compare?

Massachusetts didn't make the top 10 high school graduation rates in the nation, according to preliminary data released by the U.S. Department of Education on Monday, but Concord-Carlisle High School has a higher graduation rate than the state average. The graduation rates released Monday are for the 2010-2011 school year—the first year for which all states used a common, adjusted four-year cohort graduation rate, according to a U.S. Department of Education press release. Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) spokesman JC Considine told Patch in an email that Massachusetts has been computing cohort graduation rates since 2006, which are available on the DESE website. According to the preliminary state-…

CCHS Building Committee Says 'No' to Keeping Bus Depot

Keeping the bus depot would be too costly, the committee says.

The Concord-Carlisle Building Committee on Wednesday said “No” to building around an on-site bus depot, which would allow the district’s transportation department to operate there. A week after it voted unanimously to allocate no more than $50,000 to study the possibility of keeping the bus depot on site, the CCHS Building Committee decided it would be too costly to design around the bus depot in terms of dollars and the potential impact on getting the project back in position for state reimbursement. According to the presentations on Wednesday, Sept. 12, demolition of the bus depot was presumed in the already over-budget project costs, and potential expenses accrued through altering the design plans would have had to be absorbed by the …

Concord Boys Lacrosse Wins State Title

Patriots scored first seven goals of game, wins 13-3 over Algonquin.

Coming into the Division 2 boys lacrosse final last night at Foley Stadium the game looked like a toss-up on paper. Algonquin, the Central Massachusetts champions, entered with a 22-1 record. Concord-Carlisle, the Eastern Massachusetts champions, entered at 21-0. By game’s end though, one thing was certain: Concord-Carlisle was the best team in Division 2. The Patriots scored the first seven goals of the game and cruised to a 13-3 win to cap a perfect season. “I am just so unbelievably proud of this team,” Concord-Carlisle senior Jackson Finigan said. “This is amazing; we just finished a 22-0 season, and we just played a really great team and we just came out firing on all cylinders.” Finigan scored a whopping six goals to lead all …

Concord Claims EMass Crown

Patriots survive Wellesley rally; advance to final tomorrow.

Call it a struggle; call it a scuffle. Either way it was a classic. The Concord-Carlisle boys lacrosse team survived a torrent of fourth-quarter goals from Wellesley to win the Eastern Massachusetts Division 2 crown 5-4 yesterday in front of a loud crowd at Harvard Stadium. The Patriots advance to tomorrow’s state final against Algonquin. The game will be played at Foley Field in Worcester. Wellesley senior Oliver Saffery scored the lone goal of the first quarter. The Raiders dominated the possession and tempo of the period, but the Patriot defense did enough to fend them off. “It was real nerve-wracking in the first six minutes,” Concord-Carlisle coach Tom Dalicandro said. “I thought we were throwing the ball away; they were pressing us…

Patriots Roll Past CM, Advance to Harvard

Eight different goalscorers power Concord-Carlisle to win.

After going through the handshake line Concord-Carlisle junior midfielder Brendan Finigan pumped his fists and shouted one word: Harvard. He and his Patriot teammates will have a chance to win the Division 2 East title Wednesday at Harvard Stadium after they dominated Catholic Memorial 11-6 Friday afternoon at CCHS. The Patriots will play either Hingham or Wellesley on Wednesday. “It was really a team effort,” Concord-Carlisle junior Kevin Delehey said. “I thought we played great all-around. Holding a team like that for such few goals really helps. It’s hard for us to lose when our team only gives up five or six goals a game.” The Patriots truly did play a team game. Eight different Patriots scored a goal, including Finigan and Delehey, …

Second Night of Town Meeting Focuses on Keeping School Transportation In-Town

The second night of Town Meeting at CCHS turned into Special Town Meeting early on. Articles 2,3,4 and 5 were the main topics of discussion.

A total of 593 voters turned out last night for Concord's Town Meeting at CCHS. After some time dedicated to thanking recent retirees and those moving on from Town government positions, Town Meeting formally changed to Special Town Meeting where four of the eight special articles were tackled. Article 2 – Land Acquisition – 51 Brooks Road After postponing discussion on Article 1 – Sale of Conservation Restriction for the Former Landfill Site at 759 Walden Street due to the Board of Selectmen needing more time to develop their presentation on the issue, Article 2 was discussed. Article 2 sought to authorize the selectmen the sum of $695,000 to purchase land on 51 Laws Brook Road next to the popular Rideout Playground. Town Manager Chris …
