A Talk About the Economy, and Some Relaxing Crafts

The library starts this year’s Thursday Author Series, and the local craft store hosts a craft fair.

Good morning and welcome to a brand-new week! I’m happy to be here, are you? I spent every spare minute this weekend reading the biography of Steve Jobs for my book group – fascinating history, especially as I have been a Macintosh fan for, well, longer than I’d like to admit. And since I lived through the whole evolution of Apple, it’s really interesting to now view the story through the lens of history. Very eye opening, indeed. I’m a big reader, but I have to admit I haven’t read the books written by this month’s presenter at the Concord Library’s Thursday Author’s Series, happening at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday night, Sept.27. Each month from September to May, the library hosts an author on a Thursday evening, and this month it’s …

About Town

For the Kids

There are lots of opportunities to keep kids busy and out of trouble this fall.

Good morning, and welcome to a brand-new week! I know, it’s Monday, and everyone’s a little grumpy and wishing it were still the weekend, pulling the covers over our heads when the alarm goes off and desperately hoping for a few more minutes of sleep. Or maybe that’s just me. But ready or not, the week will start anyway, so better just to up and greet the day! I’ve got some great activities for kids to share with you, so grab your coffee and dig in. Study time A new week means a new week of school, which of course means homework. And sometimes the middle school set can use a little nudging, or just the right atmosphere, to get the inspiration to get down to work. Lucky us: Both branches of our library offer the space, quiet, and …

About Town

Odds and Ends

Some end of year thoughts, craft plans, and a cabaret night.

Good morning and welcome to Thursday! We’re more than halfway through that weird week between holidays, recovering from the gluttony of sweets and presents while we gird up to welcome in the New Year. I’m sure all your holiday wrapping paper is put away, any visiting relatives have safely been shooed off to visit yet another local landmark, and you’re making your list of resolutions for the coming year even as we speak. Or, if you’re like me, you’re wondering how it got to be Thursday and the opened presents are still under the tree and you can’t account for how the time has passed. Good thing there are still several days left before the week runs out, January begins, and we all have to get down to business. I personally think there’s …

Get creative this Halloween season with Concord Park's Witch's Hat Decorating Contest.

Who says Halloween is just for kids? Concord Park Assisted Living is hosting a witch's hat decorating contest open to everyone on the community. "Anybody can decorate a hat and bring it in," said Meg Gaudet of Concord Park. "There's prizes — we'll have some judges coming in and the winners will get gift certificates." Submissions will be judged at Concord Park's annual Halloween party on Monday, Oct. 31. "We usually have a costume contest every Halloween," Gaudet said. "It's a lot of fun, but this time we added the element of the hat." The Halloween festivities are a big hit at Concord Park, Gaudet said. "The seniors get to see something that's a little bit more fun and out of the ordinary." Hats will be separated into adult and youth (…

Week in Review: Dollhouse Building, Special Town Meeting, and a School Renovation Project

A look back at this week's stories.

Here's a recap of what happened in Concord this week. Dabblers Hobbies and Cafe held a dollhouse building project, during which volunteers of all ages donated their time and talent to crafting a dollhouse all week. The finished product will be auctioned off as a fundraiser for the Emerson Hospital Pediatric Unit. At different points throughout the week, Betsy Yamron of Dabblers shared photos with us of the creation in progress. The Board of Selectmen set a tentative schedule for a Special Town Meeting this fall and the corresponding Special Town Election needed for the Concord-Carlisle High School building project. The meeting will be held either Monday, Nov. 7 or Tuesday, Nov. 8 — whichever best accommodates Carlisle's Town Meeting. The …
