Bigger, Brighter and Bolder Than Ever: Big Art is Back in Concord

Vermont artist David Stroymeyer shares the mad science behind the 'Big Art' he's showing at the Emerson Umbrella Center for the Arts in Concord.

Vermont artist David Stromeyer's installation was delivered earlier this month and will be celebrated in June. Working big, he says, has its challenges and benefits. “I was very interested in how people move," Stromeyer says about what got him started working on a grand scale. "Even though we’re vertical, we move in horizontal patterns, and I started thinking about what constitutes a wall, a ceiling, an opening – a lot of concerns that architects have, but I didn’t need to be worried about the functional considerations that architects are. So that actually dictated the large scale. I wanted openings that you could go in and into the piece. I was very interested in the interior aspect, as well as the read from a distance.” But it's not just…

Coming Soon: Andy and David Newman: ‘Reciprocal Influences’

The brothers exhibit their work beginning next week at Concord’s Emerson Umbrella for the Arts.

The following information was provided by the Emerson Umbrella. Opening Jan. 8, Emerson Umbrella’s gallery welcomes the work of Concord painter Andy Newman and his brother David of San Francisco. It is only the second time that they have exhibited together; the first was some four years ago, also at the Emerson Umbrella. The brothers’ mother, Greta Newman, was an artist who exhibited in the United States and Europe and exercised a major influence on both of her sons. (Four of her early works, done in and just after art school, will be included in the exhibition.)   David began painting seriously in high school and went on to complete his formal training at the Rhode Island School of Design.
