Debra’s Natural Gourmet celebrates Hanukkah and Christmas, and merchants open their doors for a night of shopping.
Happy Hanukkah!! Yes, it’s the eight-day festival of lights, meaning eight days of presents and latkes and dreidel games – let the partying begin! Of course, it does mean you’d better have your shopping done, without the benefit of the two extra weeks the Christians get, but then you also don’t have to decorate a tree, so I guess we’ll call it even. Over at Debra’s Natural Gourmet in West Concord, they’re celebrating the holiday in style this Thursday, Dec. 13, with musicians from Kerem Shalom, meaning everyone gets to sing and dance. Oh, and they will also be making latkes – gluten-free, no less – for everyone who shows up. I do love these little fried pancakes of deliciousness! It runs from 6:30 to 8 p.m. this Thursday night, so get …

Friday, December 7, 2012
This year, Hanukkah begins on the evening of Saturday, Dec. 8 and ends on the evening of Sunday, Dec. 16. Observing the Festival of Lights goes hand-in-hand with making special Hanukkah foods. Before you light the menorah, make sure you have all the ingredients for some great brisket, latke, and sufganiyot. Although there are many recipes, below are a few to try during the eight nights. Potato Latkes Ingredients Instructions Once they are ready to eat, try them with some apple sauce mixed with sugar & cinnamon, sour cream or just a sprinkling of salt. Brisket Ingredients Instructions Sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts) from chabad.org Ingredients Instructions TELL US: What are your favorite things to eat during Hanukkah? Do you have any …

Winter Solstice and Fresh Produce
Good morning and welcome to not only Wednesday, but the first full day of Hanukkah (it began last night at sundown) and the shortest day of the year. As they do with every solstice, the kind folks at Emerson Umbrella are hosting a celebration. I participated in the winter solstice celebration last year and it was one of my most memorable and enjoyable events, and I hope to be there again tonight. Attendance and participation are free and super family friendly. Better yet, you’ll all be back home in less than two hours – it being a school night and all. Children and adults join a singalong, chant and dance around a bonfire blazing before the riverbank. Last year, we had snow on the ground, which added a special touch to welcoming winter. …

Hanukkah kicks off, CYT holds auditions, and two local organizations get their presents early.
Happy Hanukkah! Yes, it’s the first night of the Festival of Lights, and the good news is, if you’re not quite ready for it, you’ve got seven more days to get it all done. Time to make the latkes and play with dreidels, and of course, light the menorah. Let the holiday begin! If you’re NOT celebrating today, and you have, or are, a child 10 or older, you might want to consider auditioning for the Concord Youth Theater’s next production, The Pied Piper. This is the story of the town of Hamlin, which is overrun with rats, and what happens when you don’t pay your bill. Auditions run today and tomorrow, from 3:45 to 6 p.m. I’m not sure if there are openings for today – you only need to attend one of the audition dates – but if you call 978-…
