All The World’s a Stage

Some great theater is happening over at the Concord Players, and at Emerson Umbrella.

Good morning and welcome to Thursday! Another beautiful fall week is coming to a close; I hope you’ve been getting out and enjoying the mild temperatures and colorful leaves – though not as colorful as I would like, I have to say. Does it seem a little duller to you this year? It does to me. One thing I love about the fall is the start of the theater season, and we’re lucky to be swimming in it here in town. For starters, The Concord Players open their season with a Tony-award-winner, Mister Roberts. This was also a movie starring Henry Fonda, James Cagney and William Powell, among others. All the action takes place aboard a cargo vessel in the South Pacific during WWII. The set alone is reason enough to see this show: Carlisle resident …

Culture in Concord

Concord Center gets a Cultural District designation; check out the different cultural opportunities there.

Good morning, all, and welcome to a brand-new week! Did you have a good weekend, do anything fun? I spent a chunk of my weekend in hockey rinks – yes, believe it or not, the uber-long season of kid hockey has begun, with skates needing sharpening weekly from now until, oh, April. With any luck, you did something a little more cultural. Speaking of culture, did you know that Concord Center has been added to the list of sites designated as Cultural Districts by the Massachusetts Cultural Council? We got the designation a few weeks ago, thanks to the efforts of Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Stephanie Stillman, as well as supporting letters written by local cultural concerns near the center of town. Here’s how it came about: Back in …

Orchard House Turns 100, Charlotte’s Web Comes to Concord, and It’s Time to Register for the PMC Kids Ride

There are lots of opportunities to support local organizations; check them out here.

Maureen is right: the lady slippers are beginning to bloom, and the weather is getting milder – perfect for those walks in the woods. If you haven’t yet been up in the woods where all the Thoreau quotes are, as well as the quotes of other famous people, then take the time to do it. Totally worth the walk. The Concord Players closed out their very successful run of Little Women last weekend, and now Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House is getting ready to celebrate their 100th anniversary as a museum. If you’re going to be around over the Memorial Day weekend, consider buying tickets to the Saturday night Boston Pops performance at Symphony Hall. That night, May 26, is a benefit for Orchard House, and will feature a special performance by …

About Town: Movies, Theater and Owls

Friday Flicks shows “Do It Again,” CCHS does “A Little Night Music,” and CYT performs “The Pied Piper.” Plus, there are owls.

Hello, and welcome to another Thursday! I know it’s still early in the month, but this weekend marks the beginning of Daylight Savings Time. Yes, sadly we will be losing an hour of precious weekend time on Sunday, so start saving up now, double up on your chores, shorten your to do lists, whatever it takes to make that loss just a little less painful. And while, in the short term, it means darker mornings, it also means we’re moving closer to spring and a later sunset, and that’s always a nice thing. But before all that happens, there’s a film to see, specifically the next Friday Flicks film, “Do It Again.” It happens tomorrow night, Friday, at 7 p.m., and unlike the other Friday Flicks, this one takes place at the Main Library. This is a …

Amateurs Night

Concord Players’ winter show opens next week.

Happy Groundhog Day!! Yes, it’s Feb. 2, the day we find out how much longer winter will last – at least, if you believe the groundhog. Since I’m writing this BEFORE the actual day, I can’t tell you the outcome, but if my weather app is correct, and Thursday is overcast, then the groundhog won’t see his shadow, which means spring is on the way! Woo hoo!! I’m going to choose to believe that’s what will happen, even though this really has been the winter-that-wasn’t. And I’m OK with that. But even if spring is around the corner, it’s still winter now, and we all need to find ways to bide our time until the trees blossom. You are in luck, because one of those ways is to enjoy a fine theater experience, and the Concord Players are happy to …

Weekend Recap

There was plenty to do in Concord this past weekend – did you get to any of it?

Last week I told you about a whole lot of holiday happenings here in town, and I’m happy to say I managed to check out a few of them. It helped me get into the holiday spirit, and jump-started my holiday shopping, so all in all it was a big success. But honestly, I expected nothing less. I started with the Holiday Book Sale at the library on Friday. I volunteered to help out – really, the best way to be in the know is to volunteer – and it was an eye-opening experience. First off, there was a line of people waiting to get into the book sale before it even opened. These were serious shoppers, some with empty bags waiting to be filled with excellent quality used books. The Friends of the library, who were in charge of this event, did a …

Kid’s Play

Concord Youth Theater presents Anne of Green Gables this weekend and next; CCPI presents another APPLAUD installment.

I am a big fan of theater. I love watching it — the musicals where people spontaneously break into song and dance in the middle of their regular life; the comedies where you can forget your troubles and just laugh; and the dramas that make you think. And I love performing it — standing on a stage in front of people who have come to be entertained by you. There’s nothing so exhilarating as looking out into those lights, saying your lines, and hearing the response of the audience. It’s a total adrenaline rush. What’s also great is that theater can be a lifelong interest, for both spectators and participants. The Concord Youth Theater provides that opportunity right here in Concord. For the young performer, CYT offers classes and workshops…

A Healthy Dose

Local doctor goes on TV with winter health tips.

I had a very interesting experience last week: my computer hard drive crashed. It had nothing to do with the power outage – which I personally did not experience – but it took with it my email, and anything else I hadn’t recently backed up. Fortunately, my hard drive had showed its hand earlier with a few hiccups, which is the ONLY reason it was backed up at all. But I learned a good lesson, reacquainted myself with the phone, and am now rebuilding my personal preferences on my shiny new hard drive. I’m not sure what made it crash, and may never know, but now my plan is prevention. Just as it is with my personal health: I exercise, try to eat veggies – in addition to my daily dose of chocolate, of course – and get a flu shot, though I’m …

Making It Up

New after school program encourages improvisation.

Remember when you were a little kid, and you pretended to be a superhero and tied your bath towel around your neck and ran around the house yelling “Mighty Mouse is on the way!” Or was that just me? There is something so freeing about being able to let go of your inhibitions and let your inner actor shine through. Molly Delehy knows this, which is why she’s leading a new after school improvisation and games class. It’s for middle school students, the perfect age for learning to be comfortable in your own skin. And the cool thing is you don’t have to be a theater expert to do it; it’s for anyone who wants to give it a try. As Molly says, “Anything you do here is right; you can’t be wrong in this class.” Improv is fun because it’s unscripted…

Update: Spring Cleaning; All the World's a Stage

Onstage and backstage at the Concord Players' "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"

It's Time for Spring Cleaning Ah, spring! Rebirth and renewal! And, sadly, spring cleaning. Whether it’s the leaves you meant to rake last fall but never did, the old furniture you need to donate, or the detritus you’ve been storing in your garage since Hector was a pup, you have lots to do, and it’s making you tired just thinking about it. Well, fear no more! If you’re looking for help with this daunting task, there are two groups offering one-day services. The first is the CCHS Lacross team’s Spring Clean-up Day, Saturday, April 30 (rain date May 1). They have two shifts available: 9 a.m. to noon, or 1 to 4 p.m., at a cost of $15 per hour per player. You can contact Julie or Diane at laxcleanup@yahoo.com, or call Diane George at 978-369-…

I have hired both the football and baseball cleanup teams in the past, and have been very happy with the services. The kids are great, ready to work, and the money supports a great cause. I highly recommend signing up.   more ›
