Concord-born man killed in New Zealand mining disaster. Carlisle dad jousts with fate
Mining Disaster claims life of Concord-born man John and Barbara Marden and family extend sincere gratitude to friends and neighbors for helping them through a time of grief. Their nephew, Concord native Francis Marden, was among the 29 miners who perished in an explosion in a New Zealand mine last month. Francis, 41, was born in Concord and his two brothers David and Bill are graduates of CCHS. The family moved to New Zealand, the father's homeland, before Francis entered high school. Upon finishing school in New Zealand, Francis returned to the United States to help his uncle John Marden with his home construction business in Concord and surrounding communities and Lake Forest, Ill.
