Town Meeting: Article 15 Fails, CMLP Internet Expansion Funded

By turns tense and workmanlike, Concord's annual Town Meeting on Tuesday tackled 11 articles on Tuesday night, voting down only a petitioner's bid to "Address Educational and Fiscal Concerns in the Concord Public Schools."

  Below you'll find a summary of articles and actions from the second night of Concord's annual Town Meeting, held Tuesday, April 23 at Concord-Carlisle High School. Article 8, Concord Public School Renovations Town Meeting easily passed a $795,000 appropriation for remodeling, reconstructing, extraordinary repairs or related work at various Concord Public Schools. According to Maureen Spada, the presenter for the School Committee, the lion’s share of these funds will be put toward electrical improvements, roofing and HVAC work at the Peadoby and Sanborn schools, while a smaller portion will go toward heating and paving work …

I believe the school committee member meant "parents". He was talking about the new educator evaluator system that the Department of Education is putting into place, and I believe there is a parent survey as part of it. That is something I will follow up on. It is important to note, that like the TELL (teacher survey) the results will be only be analyzed and posted by the Dept. of Ed if they get …   more ›

Selectmen Review Preliminary Proposed CPA Projects

A facelift for the Town House tops the list; selectmen call for more detail in preliminary CPA project presentations.

Monday night, Town Manager Chris Whelan, immediately preceeding a glowing evaluation from the Board of Selectmen, informed the board about possible Community Preservation Act projects that could be taken up for the end of the year. The Community Preservation Act is a piece of legislation signed into law in 2000 by Governor Patrick that allowed more funding for capital improvements to various areas noted as part of overall communal preservation in 148 town and cities across the commonwealth. The preliminary discussion focused on a number of possible projects and their estimated costs including: The total of all potential projects was estimated at $2,195,000. However, there is only $1,100,000 in the projected CPA funds for 2012, with another…

Orchard House Digs Into Centennial Prep for Preservation’s Sake

Historic home preparing for 100th anniversary as a museum.

The following information was provided by Jan Turnquist, Executive Director of Louisa May Alcott's Orchard House. In anticipation of its 100th birthday as a museum, Louisa May Alcott's Orchard House is digging into preparations — literally! Officially opened to the public on May 27, 1912 (Memorial Day weekend), Orchard House will hold a festive party on its grounds during Memorial Day weekend of 2012. All are invited, so save the date! The Concord School of Philosophy, founded by Bronson Alcott in 1879, will play an important role in that celebration, so much-needed work will be done on the School this fall to ensure its survival, with the added bonus of having it look its best in the spring. Potential 2012 CPA Projects: A New Fence at Sleepy Hollow, A New Wall at Hutchins, and More

Suggested projects for next year's Community Preservation funds.

The Board of Selectmen discussed potential projects this week that town department heads and committee members have suggested may be appropriate uses of Community Preservation funds. While no official decisions have been made about next year's CPA projects, here is a look at what's on the top of the list. Suggested Projects: Regardless of which projects are selected as potential CPA fund recipients, any such projects and issuance of funds would have to be approved by the 2012 annual Town Meeting. All together, the suggested projects total $622, 500. The projected available CPA funds of 2012 total $1 million, with a current CPA land reserve balance of $270,000.
