Update: The Birthday Gift of Life/Relax on the Beach

A special birthday gift.

At last, it is Friday, the day that always seems so far away on Monday. This week, though, not only did the week fly by, but so have the years. You see, today is my baby’s 19th birthday. To quote the late Sandy Denny, “Who knows where the time goes?” I sure don’t, but I do hope you all have as wonderful a day as I have planned for my son, and an even better weekend. Outdoor Yoga in the Morning If you really want to get the weekend off to a fresh start, I recommend you gather up your water bottle, sun screen, mat or towel and head over to Walden Pond for an early morning yoga class. Yes, beginning today, and for the next two Fridays through Aug. 26, Nancy Richardot Tenney will lead a 90-minute nature-based, meditative, gentle yoga class on …

The Best Ways to Stay Cool in Concord

With temperatures peaking at 97 today, people are coming up with all kinds of ways to avoid the heat.

For some, relief cannot come soon enough from the heat that has settled in across much of the Northeast. True Bay Staters, however, are taking it in stride, as temperatures in the mid to upper 90s — hovering around 100 — are to be expected from a New England summer. Here are some ways to stay cool when it's super hot: Concord Recreation Day Camp Kids from kindergarten through seventh grade can still sign up for camp at the Hunt Recreation Center on Stow Street, with sessions running July 25-29, Aug. 1-5, Aug. 8-12. Post Camp, for those who attended at least one of the earlier sessions, will be held Aug. 15-19. Rates vary dependent upon age and the camp sessions selected. Camp Director Molly Frank said when the temperatures rise like this, …

Update: Training in Walden Pond; Remembering 9/11

Al Filipov Peace & Justice Forum sets schedule.

Training in Walden Pond Walden Pond is famous for helping people discover their true selves. Henry David Thoreau found the kettle-hole to be the inspiration behind some of his finest works. Frederic Tudor made a small fortune harvesting its ice and shipping it to the Caribbean, Europe and India. Rocker Don Henley dedicated many concert proceeds to The Walden Woods Project, a nonprofit he helped create to protect the natural sylvan landscape surrounding it. Nearly every morning — even those in December, January and February — swimmers will make their way to the banks to swim in the 2-mile pond’s nearly 61 acres of fresh water. That discipline, they find, provides a workout that is as spiritual as it is physical. Susie Glines of Littleton is…
